Chapter Eight

Jon only half-listened to Basil’s chatter. The journalist had begun to apologize for the constant rumbling of his stomach, which had led him into wishing he had brought some sort of snack along with him, and Jon promptly filtered out the unnecessary words. Basil seemed to wish to speak, and Jon saw no need to stop him.

Instead Jon was ruminating on whether or not it was sensible to allow Basil to accompany him. The only way to assess the wisdom in it was to accumulate a list of the positive and negative potential of doing so and reach a conclusion from the data at hand.

The positives, then? Basil could certainly see the ghost, and an additional pair of eyes on the scene could prove useful. It should be a simple matter to summon Jenkins and drain her, and Basil might learn from the experience; Jon could not see any value in denying anyone the opportunity to accumulate knowledge. In the longer term Basil’s understanding of the magic at his disposal should grow, and he could prove a valuable ally, particularly against anything more dangerous or powerful than Jenkins. There was also the matter of the information contained within his book.

The idea of intentionally avoiding an opportunity to glean new information was alien to Jon.

There was also a peculiar pleasure to be had in being within Basil’s presence. The journalist had quickly moved beyond his initial, unavoidable reaction to Jon’s presence and focused on much more important things. He was curious and eager to find the truth, even if that took him beyond the limitations of his current knowledge or comfort. Jon found that Basil’s eagerness to discuss the things which most people were afraid of to be refreshing.

Dare he even consider the idea that conversing with Basil was enjoyable?

Very peculiar.

And Basil was cute, with his light smattering of freckles and his honey-brown eyes that gleamed gold in the sunlight.

How ridiculous.

The negatives, then. Basil was inexperienced. It was, of cause, a recursion Jon was all too familiar with: if not given the opportunity to gain experience, how could Basil ever hope to do so? Inexperience may place him in danger, but Basil would have to begin somewhere, and at least with Jon on hand it should offer him a significant reduction in the potential for harm while he took his first steps. Add to that the fact that Jenkins did not appear as though she would be difficult for Jon to dispose of and this would actually seem to be the ideal situation for Basil to begin his learning.

Ultimately all living things died. If Basil were to be harmed, it would not be Jon’s responsibility, and if Jon had not been here today he would have to work alone regardless.

“I haven’t finished translating the whole book yet-” Basil said. His tone suggested that he had been talking about the book for a little while now.

Jon frowned and refocused his attention.

“-but I’m pretty sure I remember there being a spell in here that can summon ghosts.
